OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY THREATEN U.S. HEALTH GAINS

WEB BASED PROGRAMS DON'T HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS, RESEARCH FINDS

FAD DIETS HAVE A MAGNETIC PULL

OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY THREATEN U.S. HEALTH GAINS

Health problems resulting from overweight and obesity could reverse many of the health gains achieved in the U.S. in recent decades, according to a Surgeon General's "call to action" just issued.

"Overweight and obesity are among the most pressing new health challenges we face today," HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. "Our modern environment has allowed these conditions to increase at alarming rates and become a growing health problem for our nation. By confronting these conditions, we have tremendous opportunities to prevent the unnecessary disease and disability they portend for our future."

"Overweight and obesity may soon cause as much preventable disease and death as cigarette smoking," Surgeon General David Satcher said.

Approximately 300,000 U.S. deaths a year currently are associated with obesity and overweight . The total direct and indirect costs attributed to overweight and obesity amounted to $117 billion in the year 2000.

In 1999, an estimated 61 percent of U.S. adults were overweight, along with 13 percent of children and adolescents. Obesity among adults has doubled since 1980, while overweight among adolescents has tripled.

Already, these trends are associated with dramatic increases in conditions such as asthma, and in Type 2 diabetes among children. Satcher said failure to address overweight and obesity "could wipe out some of the gains we've made in areas such as heart disease, several forms of cancer, and other chronic health problems."

WEB BASED PROGRAMS DON'T HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS, RESEARCH FINDS

A recent research study conducted by the University of Vermont and presented at a meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity has shown that weight loss programs that rely on an exclusively web based approach are not effective. Basically the study divided participants into groups that had personal contact and guidance versus an Internet group that met in chat sessions, tracked their weight on the Web and had e-mail contact with program providers. The results? Those in the Internet group gained - an average of two pounds during the first six months! The Trim Program is not web based and with good reason. Web based weight loss programs don't work.

FAD DIETS HAVE A MAGNETIC PULL

People seem drawn to fad diets in much the same way magnets attract objects made of iron. It doesn't make a difference if the diet is odd or potentially harmful. The thought is that new or unusual is better! The search for the quick, easy, and different is so powerful common sense is rarely used when considering "off the wall" weight loss approaches.

We've all been tempted by the possibility a novel weight loss approach will produce a rapid weight loss. We don't stop to consider such approaches are so far off the beaten track they rarely can be sustained for an adequate length of time. Anyone eating boiled cabbage in soup for a week, for example, is going to lose weight, simply by virtue of the fact that one's normal caloric intake has been curtailed and replaced with roughage and fluid. Eating this way will produce weight loss, along with unpleasant digestive side effects! Obviously this type of eating can not be continued too long; first of all, it is not normal to consume cabbage soup day after day; second, it is difficult to remain motivated when eating is so restricted; and third, and most important, the body isn't getting the range of nutrients it needs for healthy functioning.

Besides failing to provide adequate and healthy nutrition for the body, fad diets fail to address one thing which is essential for weight loss success - the issue of eating habits. Fad diets do not teach people how to eat properly. If a better way of eating isn't modeled or taught, what is one to do after the fad diet is stopped? And for sure the fad diet will be stopped, for no one can exist just eating cabbage and water, or eating large amounts of grapefruit, or eating only high fat proteins, etc. When no attention is paid to eating habits, when fad diets are stopped, old eating patterns resume and old weight levels result.

It is human nature to want to find a quick and easy solution to a problem, but when it comes to weight loss, quick and easy solutions are costly, not only in terms of spending dollars for little result; but costly to physical well being as fad dieting can lead to malnutrition, and fad dieting is costly to emotional well being too, as the sense of frustration which accompanies yet another failed attempt at weight loss can be depressing.

From the Trim perspective, fad diets put the individual in a position to fail. Little weight is lost, and what weight is lost is impossible to maintain, improved eating is not modeled and better eating habits are not taught. If your roof leaked, you'd never try and patch the hole with paper, you would know that paper was not an adequate repair. Try thinking of fad diets as well as pills, shakes, powders, weight loss medications, plus other odd methods of weight loss, like now fashionable body wraps for example, as methods of weight loss which are inadequate. Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to do what is tried and true. In case of that roof leak, you'd probably have the roof replaced or you would seal the leak or have a reputable roofer seal and patch your roof with shingles or other appropriate materials.

There are four essentials needed for weight loss success. 1). You must accept the fact you will need to work at achieving your goal. It takes effort to lose weight. 2). You will need to be open to learning new ways of making food choices, and new ways of thinking about food. To a great extent, your eating habits are what caused your weight gain. If you don't make eating habit changes, your weight level won't drop. 3). You will need to abstain from eating certain foods and drinking certain kinds of beverages while you are working at losing weight. A "little taste of this and that" kind of mentality doesn't help weight come off, you need to work at developing self control. And, 4). You need to eat foods from all the major food groups. To be healthy, the body needs the nutrients foods from all the major food groups offer.

You know what this sounds like? If you said the Trim Program, you're correct. The Trim Program is successful in helping people lose weight and then maintain their weight losses because all the essentials to weight loss success have been incorporated into the Trim Program. Sometimes the fastest way to accomplish something is to do it right in the first place, and the fact that the Trim Program has been around for over 40 years and the fact that the Trim Program has helped thousands lose weight demonstrates that the Trim Program must be "doing it right"! You won't be on your own. We'll be with you all the way. To achieve your weight loss goal, all you really have to do is be willing to re-educate your eating habits and follow the Trim Program you choose as directed.
